Switching Your Dog or Cat’s Food Explained

Switching Your Dog or Cat’s Food Explained

Mar 28th 2024

So much has been written about transitioning from your dog or cat’s current food. Some of what dog and cat lovers can find on the topic is sometimes very complicated and introduces some anxiety even if you think a switch to a better food is necessary for your pet’s overall health.

Included is a simpler explanation highlighting what you might need to be cautious about and propose a schedule for you to consider when making the “pet food jump”.

For dogs or cats that are used to rotational feeding or a variety of foods, your pet may be in a better position to switch its food than a dog or cat that has relied on the same food or has a history of digestion issues. To keep this simple, a gradual switch is recommended regardless of your pet’s current feeding habits. Switching diets more abruptly can cause digestion problems like diarrhea or more gas. These issues can typically be associated with the introduction of the new food, but in reality it is how the new food was introduced that is really causing the digestion issues.

A gradual switch, typically a week long food switch is generally recommended. Here is a schedule that we propose when asked how to begin to introduce Activa Custom. Start your transition with your old pet food and introduce Activa slowly.

• Days 1-2: Introduce 3 parts old food and 1 part Activa Custom.

• Days 3-4: Introduce 2 parts old food and 2 parts Activa Custom.

• Days 5-6: Introduce 1 part old food and 3 parts Activa Custom.

• Day 7+: Only feed Activa Custom.

When considering Activa’s lines, you may want to start with a line that is similar to the one you are currently feeding. Original is the perfect blend of protein, omega fatty acids, other critical nutrients and available for dogs and cats in eight different protein varieties. No Corn maximizes nutrient absorption by avoiding corn to include more protein, essential vitamins and minerals. An Activa Grain Free line is also available for your dog or cat if your pet is currently on a grain free diet or would like to more of a grain free diet.

Regardless of the Activa line that works best for your dog or cat, consider adding Activa Custom’s Digestion Supplement as you make the Activa Custom transition. The supplement’s prebiotics (inulin) and probiotics (or good bacteria) can help soothe your dog or cat’s stomach for the transition. You can also pick from a variety of nutritional supplements that are made for specific breeds, life stage, behavioral or health with Activa Custom.
