Psssst……..make sure you are getting all of the nutrition promised on the bag

May 23rd 2024

Shopping online or roaming the aisles of your local pet stores you see claims on dog and cat food bags that almost seem too good to be true. Antioxidant rich? Vital nutrients? Complete essentials? Proactive health? What does this all mean? Is it true?

We know all of this can be confusing, but it is really difficult to tell if those claims are true. It’s difficult to tell because the traditional process of manufacturing dry pet food can result in the loss of key nutrients. The manufacturing process involves a high degree of heat and pressure which can destroy nutrients such as probiotics, enzymes, omega fatty acids and vitamins. This can lead to a difference in the description on the front of a bag of pet food to the food that is actually in the bag.

And to make matters worse, there is an element of time. You know the time it takes to get from a food manufacturing facility to storage or distribution facility, the additional time it takes to get to the store and finally the time before it is fed to your beloved pet. All of this time beginning from the manufacturing facility can cause a decrease in taste and vitamins. This can also contribute to the difference in what is promised on a bag of food to what your dogs and cats ultimately get to enjoy.

To be more certain, your pet is getting the most nutrition from your bags of food consider

  • Reviewing any expiration or use by dates on the bag.
  • Purchase a bag of food sized so that it will not sit in your home for too long.
  • Store your food in airtight containers.
  • Adding nutritional supplements your dog or cat may need.

In Blog 4 (“What is all that “stuff” my neighbor adds to her dog’s food? Am I missing something?)” we discussed incorporating Supplements and Oils in your pet’s food. There could be joint health or skin and coat issues you are trying to address with diet. You could also consider including Supplements and Oils in your pet’s food as a precaution to make sure your dog or cat is receiving the nutrition they need because of manufacturing and time.

Unfortunately, Activa Custom is not immune to the effects from a dry food’s manufacturing process or the necessary logistics. Quite literally, this had been eating at us for many years. We wanted to make sure the food we were making had the same nutrition and flavor we put into it as when dogs and cats enjoyed it. Until 2010, we brought the Activa Custom Patents in machine, process and method to market. Each bag of Activa Protein is blended with the Nutritional Supplements that are most important for your pet. Your choice of Oils are then included to increase palatability and for their own health benefits. And lastly, naturally created Flavors per your request are added to the food.

This is all done at no additional cost because like we said, at Activa Custom we are determined to make sure our food is as good as we can make it for your pet.
